The Black History 101 Mobile Museum (BH101MM) is an innovative traveling table top exhibit depicting Black memorabilia spanning slavery to Hip Hop. The mobile museum is a cost effective approach to present historical artifacts to schools systems, communities, colleges and universities throughout the nation. The museum has over 5,000 rare treasures among its collection including original documents from historic Black figures whose contributions helped shape the United States. Artifacts in this unparalleled mobile collection represent items from the categories of slavery, Jim Crow era, music, sports, the Civil Rights and Black Power era, and popular culture.

A few prominent pieces in the collection's archives include a rare slave bill of sale and documents signed by Booker T. Washington, Ralph Bunche, Rosa Parks, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Shirley Chisholm, Dr. Dorthy Height, Alex Haley, Carter G. Woodson, and many others.

In 2011, Khalid el-Hakim, the museum's founder and curator, celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the BH101MM. Inspired by Dr. David Pilgrim, his former Ferris State University professor, el-Hakim stands on the shoulder's of the great archivist of Black culture and history such as Arthur Schomburg, Dr. Margaret Burroughs and Dr. Charles Wright. Khalid has been called "the Schomburg of the hip hop generation".

"My mission is to raise the consciousness of the human family by sharing artifacts that celebrate the contributions, achievements, and experiences of African Americans", states el-Hakim. "I want people to walk away as inspired as I've been as a collector and student of this history."

The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts that includes rare signed documents by Malcolm X, Alex Haley, Rosa Parks, Booker T. Washington and Minister Louis Farrakhan. Founder Khalid el-Hakim began collecting the artifacts that celebrate Black History while a student at Ferris State University. His first was a piece he acquired at a gas station in the South during a spring break trip in 1991.The artifact was a disturbing and racist figurine of a Black boy going to toilet on a pot, eating a piece of watermelon. "My former sociology professor at Ferris State, Dr. David Pilgrim encouraged me to collect artifacts as a tool to expose people to the ugly history of racism in America," el-Hakim said. "This collection is my gift to Black History. The history of Black people in this country is something that should be celebrated and studied not just in February, but throughout the year." The idea of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum was born in 1995 during el-Hakim's participation in the historic Million Man March in Washington, DC. He took to heart Minister Farrakhan's message to make a difference in communities throughout the United States. The museum's first apperance was in 1997 at the Detroit Job Corps. In 2005, el-Hakim made history when he acquired a highly sought after personal scrapbook of newspaper clippings documenting Ku Klux Klan activity in Michigan at an auction of items from the estate of Grand Wizard Robert Miles in Howell, MI. Other parts of the collection include a rare slave bill of sale of a woman and her children and an original photograph of a 1930 Marion, Ind. lynching that inspired the song "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday. The Black History 101 Mobile Museum has received several awards including a Testimonial Resolution, Spirit of Detroit Award, and Distinguished Service Award from the City of Detroit. One of the most popular exhibits is housed in the mobile museum's 30-foot trailer and is titled "And the Legacy Continues..". This one-of-a-kind hip hop exhibit has been a popular attraction for the past two years at the African World Festival in downtown Detroit. The tour, which includes appearances by Professor Griff of the legendary hip hop group Public Enemy, will begin January 17 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and will continue through April. Other stops in the national tour include the University of Wisconsin, East Tennessee State University, Marietta College and Gonzaga University.
